FINANCIAL AID
MORE INFORMATION: http://www.cfisd.net/en/parents-students/academics/college-career-readiness
FINANCIAL AID is defined as money awarded to a student to assist with the costs of higher education. Typically this category of monetary assistance for college includes: grants, loans, work study programs. Scholarships are included in financial aid package calculations; although there is often a different application process for most university scholarships. To receive ANY money from a Financial Aid Office, students AND parents must complete a FAFSA Application!!!
In the past, many families did not choose to complete the FAFSA because they did not believe they would qualify for financial aid. However, rules have changed and ALL STUDENTS are required to complete the FAFSA in order to receive ANY form of financial assistance from a college/university.

What is the FAFSA?
Free Application for Federal Student Aid When do I complete the FAFSA? The application opens OCTOBER 1st. Senior families will use their income taxes from the "prior, prior" year of enrollment. For Example: Attending Fall 2020: parents will complete the FAFSA with 2018 Income Tax Return. NEW for Class of 2020: Financial Aid Priority Deadline: January 15, 2020 Financial Aid is first come, first serve - so apply early to maximize your financial aid package and "free money". What do I need to apply? 1. Student must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident to receive Federal Financial Aid using the FAFSA. * Undocumented/Dream Act(DACA) students complete TASFA Application for State Financial Aid See www.collegeforalltexans.org - OR - www.aie.org: search "TASFA" to download the application. Complete one application per school MAIL the TASFA to the Financial Aid office of EACH school you are applying to attend. TASFA Students - It is recommended that you call each Financial Aid Office prior to submitting your TASFA to verify that the university does not need additional documents. 2. Students AND parent will need to request a FSA ID Number from the FAFSA website. * if parent already has a child in college and already has a FSA ID, there is no need to request another for the parent 3. A copy of income tax return forms for student and/or parent will be needed to complete questions. IMPORTANT: An income estimate can be used, but it is not recommended. This forces students to complete an extra step called Verification and can delay financial awards. 4. Log into website (see link in box to the left) and complete the application. 5. Contact University Financial Aid office or check student's financial aid status on university website a couple weeks after submission. BEWARE OF SCAMS or INCORRECT WEBSITES. The application is FREE! If they ask you for money to complete the application, it is a scam! NEED HELP COMPLETING YOUR FAFSA? CFISD FAFSA/TASFA Workshop: November 13, 2019 at the Berry Center. |
